“Arab Spring” Uprisings, 2011-2012
Syria – an “internal affair”?
The Syrian uprising is an ongoing internal conflict that began with public demonstrations on 26th January 2011, and developed into a
nationwide uprising now bordering on civil war. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad, the overthrow of his government and an end to nearly five decades of Ba’ath Party rule. The Syrian government deployed the well-equipped Syrian Army to quell the largely unarmed uprising, and several cities were besieged.
