D-Day

Operation Overlord, June 6th 1944
The Legacy of D-Day

D-Day was obviously a major turning point in World War II, so much so that even those with only a limited interest in history are generally aware of it. Its profile has also been amplified by its extensive appearance in recent popular culture, a resurgence heralded by the Steven Spielberg film Saving Private Ryan in 1998. The landings led directly to the overthrow of the German occupation of France, with Paris liberated by local resistance and Free French Forces on 25 August 1944.
